  1. What is BlackBerry Messenger?
    • BlackBerry Messenger is an instant messenger program for BlackBerry-to-BlackBerry communication utilizing your PIN code or bar code.

  3. What is a PIN, and where do I find mine?
    • It is 8 alpha-numeric digits which is unique to each device. It is not private and it is the only way for Blackberry to identify your device. You can find your PIN by:
      • Go to Options
      • Go to Status
      • You will see your Pin listed

  5. What is a bar code and where do I find mine?
    • It is a visual representation of your PIN and is assigned to each BlackBerry. Your BlackBerry Pin can be scanned or you can scan another BlackBerry barcode to add them to your BlackBerry messenger contact group. You must have BlackBerry messenger 5.0 in order to obtain your individual bar code.
    • To show your barcode:
      • Go to BlackBerry Messenger
      • Click the menu button to bring up your BlackBerry messenger options
      • Click "View my profile"
      • Click "Show" under Pin Barcode
      • Your barcode will be displayed
    • To scan another BlackBerry Barcode:
      • Go to BlackBerry messenger
      • Click the menu button to bring up your BlackBerry messenger options
      • Select "Scan a Group Barcode"
      • Click Continue
      • Your phone will go into camera mode
      • Place your phone over the barcode you wish to scan
      • Click your trackball/trackpad
      • You have now been added to the other BlackBerry device's BlackBerry messenger
        contact group

  7. Where do I get BlackBerry Messenger 5.0?
    • BlackBerry Messenger is built into the BlackBerry device. If your device does not come preloaded with BlackBerry Messenger 5.0, you can download it at www.blackberry.com/messenger through Internet Explorer or your BlackBerry Browser.

  9. Do I need a data plan to use BlackBerry Messenger?
    • Yes, BlackBerry Messenger sends pin messages through the BlackBerry servers. A BlackBerry internet plan is required to use this functionality.

    • No, BlackBerry Messenger is free to use. It simply uses data from your data plan. It does not use SMS.

  13. What is a bar code and where do I find mine?
    • To add a contact:
      • Open BlackBerry Messenger
      • Click the menu key which is next to our track ball/track pad to bring up your menu options
      • Click on add contact/invite contact, you will be brought to your address book to select the contact you want to add
      • You will be able to request by PIN, email or by scanning a pin barcode
      • Select the appropriate one based on what information you possess
      • You will be offered the option to personalize the message sent to the recipient before your request is sent

  15. How do I set up a BlackBerry Messenger Group?
    • You can have multiple BlackBerry messenger groups which allow you to communicate with each other and to send broadcast messages to group members.
    • To set up a BlackBerry Messenger Group:
      • Go to BlackBerry Messenger
      • Click the menu button to bring up your BlackBerry messenger options
      • Select New Group
      • Enter Group Name
      • Select Create Group
      • Scroll Down to the bottom of your contact list and to view your group icon
    • How to add people to a group
      • Select Group Icon
      • Select Invite Member
      • You will be able to request by PIN, email or by scanning a pin barcode
      • Select the appropriate one based on what information you possess
      • You will be offered the option to personalize the message sent to the recipient
        before your request is sent

  17. Are BlackBerry Messenger messages private?
    • Yes, the communication is between the devices and the RIM servers in Canada and is not stored in the Bahamas.
